Martin County Through a Business Owner's Eyes

Martin County has the smallest population of the five A1A counties we serve (opens in a new tab). The Census Bureau estimates 166,272 residents on July 1, 2025, up 4.9% from the 2020 base (Census QuickFacts for Martin County, Stuart and Indiantown (opens in a new tab)). The county property appraiser lists just five municipalities (opens in a new tab): the City of Stuart, the Towns of Sewall's Point, Ocean Breeze and Jupiter Island, and the Village of Indiantown. Stuart, incorporated in 1914, is the county seat and, in the city's own description (opens in a new tab), is widely known as the "Sailfish Capital of the World."

33.6%of residents are 65 or older

79.6%of occupied homes are owner-occupied (2020-2024)

Some of the best-known names in the county, including Jensen Beach, Palm City, Port Salerno and Hobe Sound, are not municipalities at all. They are communities in unincorporated Martin County, and customers use those names every day when they describe where they live and what they are looking for.

The county also keeps its skyline low. The county's tourism site, Discover Martin, notes that a county ordinance limits buildings to four stories (opens in a new tab), and much of the shoreline is protected land. The Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, whose beach tract sits at the north end of Jupiter Island, holds what the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (opens in a new tab) calls the largest contiguous section of undeveloped beach in Southeastern Florida, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park (opens in a new tab) in Hobe Sound, at more than 10,000 acres, is the largest state park in Southeast Florida.

Where A1A Runs in Martin County

In Martin County, A1A runs along the beach on Hutchinson Island. Discover Martin places Fletcher Beach half a mile south of Stuart Beach on A1A (opens in a new tab) and Glascock Beach at County Line Road and A1A (opens in a new tab), north of the Jensen Beach Causeway. The Florida Department of Transportation's District Four office names the same road in Martin County as S.R. A1A/NE Ocean Boulevard, in a resurfacing project that runs north to the Jensen Beach Causeway (opens in a new tab). Hutchinson Island is also home to the Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge, which Discover Martin describes as the county's oldest building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974.

For a business owner, that stretch of A1A carries a lot of weight. It is how residents and visitors reach the beach parks, so anything near it, from a bait shop to a dental office on the way home, depends on people knowing exactly where to turn.

The Communities Behind the Address

Stuart and the St. Lucie River. The city sits on the St. Lucie River just west of the Indian River Lagoon, and it points to the river's north and south forks for cruising and paddling. Stuart is also the Atlantic end of the Okeechobee Waterway (opens in a new tab), which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers describes as a 154-mile route from the Atlantic at Stuart through Lake Okeechobee to Fort Myers. The Census estimates 19,451 people live in the city itself, and 29.1% of them are 65 or older.

Jensen Beach, Sewall's Point, Port Salerno and Hutchinson Island. Of these four names, only Sewall's Point is its own town on the property appraiser's list. Jensen Beach, Port Salerno and Hutchinson Island are not on it, so a business there has to explain its location in the neighborhood terms customers actually use, because no city boundary does it for them.

Palm City and western Martin County. West of the coast the county turns rural. Florida's scenic highways program, run by the Florida Department of Transportation, designated 12 miles of County Road 714 as the Martin Grade Scenic Highway (opens in a new tab) in 2015, describing a road that began as a logging trail and came to be bordered by citrus groves and cattle ranches.

Hobe Sound and Jupiter Island. The south end of the county is defined by protected land. The refuge's 3.5 miles of Atlantic beach are, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service, one of the most productive sea turtle nesting areas in the Southeastern United States, and the refuge shelters nearly 40 species listed as threatened, endangered or of special concern. Jonathan Dickinson State Park runs along the Loxahatchee River (opens in a new tab), which became a National Wild and Scenic River on May 17, 1985.

Indiantown. The village was incorporated in December 2017 (opens in a new tab), the first new municipality in Martin County in more than 40 years, and its population looks very different from the coast, as the Census figures below show.

What Drives Business in Martin County

The Business Development Board of Martin County organizes its work around seven Hubs of Excellence (opens in a new tab): Marine; Agribusiness and Equestrian; Manufacturing; Aviation and Aerospace; Clean and Green Tech; IT and Innovation; and Healthcare and MedTech. Marine sits first on that list, which fits a county seat that sells itself on sailfish.

Census figures fill in the consumer side. In 2022, Martin County businesses recorded about $4.25 billion in retail sales, roughly $26,232 for every resident, along with about $1.84 billion in health care and social assistance receipts and about $609 million in accommodation and food services sales. The median household income in the 2020-2024 survey was $82,943, and the median value of an owner-occupied home was $432,200.

Most businesses here are small. The Census counted 6,400 employer establishments in 2023 and 20,553 businesses with no employees in 2024. Next door, Palm Beach County had 55,803 employer establishments. That is a very different competitive picture, and it changes what a website has to do to stand out.

What That Means for a Martin County Website

Make it easy to read and easy to call

With a third of residents aged 65 or older, readability is not a nice extra. We set body text at a comfortable size, keep contrast strong, make buttons large enough to tap with confidence and test every page at 200% zoom. The phone number sits at the top of every page as a tappable link, and forms ask only for what you need. All of it is built and tested against WCAG 2.2 AA, as described on our ADA website accessibility page.

Use the names your customers use

A homeowner in Palm City does not think of herself as living in Stuart, and a Hobe Sound customer may never search for Martin County at all. Your site should name the communities you actually serve, describe where you are in terms locals recognize, and keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere. Our local SEO work applies the same rule to your Google Business Profile and listings.

Plain-English tip: Jensen Beach, Palm City, Port Salerno and Hobe Sound do not appear on the county property appraiser's list of municipalities, yet they are the names people search with. Use them alongside Stuart on your website, so both customers and search engines can place you correctly.

Show the water you work on

Marine customers judge a business by how specifically it describes the work. A boat service site should say which waters it covers (the St. Lucie River forks, the lagoon, the inlet, offshore), what size boats it handles, whether it comes to the dock, and how to get a quote with the boat's details attached. Charter and guide businesses need clear trip types, lengths, what is included and an easy way to check dates.

Plan for the storm before the season

Martin County knows hurricanes firsthand. The National Hurricane Center's reports record that Hurricane Frances (opens in a new tab) made landfall over the southern end of Hutchinson Island on September 5, 2004, and that Hurricane Jeanne (opens in a new tab) crossed the coast at the southern end of Hutchinson Island, just east of Stuart, on September 26. A Martin County website should have a storm notice already written, a way to switch it on in minutes, and hours and contact details that are easy to change. With our optional SimpleCMS editor, you can make those changes yourself without waiting on anyone.

Reach Indiantown in its own language

Countywide, 15.2% of residents speak a language other than English at home. In Indiantown the figure is 55.6%, and 65.6% of residents are Hispanic or Latino. A business that serves Indiantown customers, such as a clinic, a contractor or a store, should consider a real Spanish section with its own pages, not a translation button. We build the structure and the language tags; the translation should come from a fluent speaker.

Let the photos show the real county

A low skyline, a protected beach and a working river are part of Martin County's identity. Stock photos of high-rise beachfronts look wrong here and customers notice. We design around your own photos of your place, your boats, your team and your work, and we compress them so pages stay fast on a phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many of my customers are retirees. What should my website do differently?

Make everything clearer, larger and easier to reach by phone. A third of Martin County residents, 33.6% in the Census Bureau's latest figures, are 65 or older. That calls for body text that is comfortable to read, strong color contrast, a tappable phone number on every page, short forms and pages that still work when someone zooms in to 200%. These are WCAG 2.2 AA basics, and we test for them.

I run a marine business near the St. Lucie River. What belongs on my website?

Say exactly what you do and where: the services you offer, the size of boats you handle, whether you come to the dock or work from a yard, and which waters you cover. Stuart sits at the Atlantic end of the 154-mile Okeechobee Waterway, so your customers may include boaters who are passing through and need help quickly. Give them a quote form that asks for boat details and a phone number that someone answers.

Most of my customers still call instead of booking online. Do I need a better website?

Yes, because the website is often what makes them call. People look you up, check that you are open, read a few reviews and then tap your number. If the number is hard to find or the page is slow on a phone, they call someone else. We put the phone number at the top of every page and make calling the easiest thing to do.

What should a Stuart-area website be ready to do when a hurricane threatens?

Post a clear status notice within minutes. In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne both came ashore at the southern end of Hutchinson Island, three weeks apart, according to the National Hurricane Center. We build a storm notice you can switch on, keep hours and contact details easy to edit, and remind you to update your Google Business Profile at the same time.

Is Martin County too small a market to justify a custom website?

Smaller markets often reward a good website sooner. The Census Bureau counted 6,400 employer establishments in Martin County in 2023, compared with 55,803 in Palm Beach County, so there are fewer serious competitors in local search results. A fast, clear, accurate website stands out more here, and it keeps working for you after the season ends.

We are in Hobe Sound, but many customers live in Tequesta and Jupiter. Can one website cover both counties?

Yes. County lines matter more to governments than to customers. Your site can name the Martin County communities you serve and the northern Palm Beach County towns you reach, with service details for each that are actually true. We also set your Google Business Profile service area to match where you really work, rather than stretching it to places you rarely go.
