A1A Web Design builds websites and handles local SEO for Indian River County businesses, from fishing and surf outfits near Sebastian Inlet to practices, shops and real estate offices in Vero Beach. Aldo works from Buffalo, New York, by phone, video and email on the same Eastern time as you, with no Florida office and no on-site visits.
Indian River County Through a Business Owner's Eyes
Indian River County sits on the Atlantic between Brevard County to the north and St. Lucie County to the south, and the county's own comprehensive plan (opens in a new tab) places it in the Treasure Coast region. Vero Beach has been the county seat since the county was created in 1925; that same year, according to the City of Vero Beach's history page (opens in a new tab), Vero was re-incorporated and renamed Vero Beach.
The 2020 Census counted 159,788 residents, and the Census Bureau estimates 172,799 as of July 1, 2025. The same comprehensive plan, adopted in 2010, points out two things every local marketer here should know: nearly two-thirds of residents live outside any city or town, and more than 90 percent live within 10 miles of the ocean. Your market is a narrow coastal band, and city limits cover only a minority of it, so good location pages use the community names people actually say.

Where A1A Runs Through the County
Here, A1A is the barrier island road. The Town of Orchid (opens in a new tab) explains that the entire island, from Sebastian Inlet in the north to the St. Lucie County line in the south, is called Orchid Island, and the county's tourism site lists public beach parks at addresses on both North and South Highway A1A. At the top of the county, the Sebastian Inlet District (opens in a new tab) describes the inlet as lying between Brevard and Indian River counties, with Sebastian Inlet State Park on both sides.
FDOT's Florida Scenic Highways program ties the island and the mainland together in the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway (opens in a new tab), which follows A1A down the coast to Wabasso Beach and US 1 through Sebastian, with historic Fellsmere and Sebastian at its southern end. Causeways link the two roads across the lagoon.
That split shows up in how people shop. A beachside cafe, a mainland contractor and an inlet charter serve the same county, but their customers make very different trips. Your contact and directions pages should say which side of the lagoon you are on and which crossing gets people there. In Vero Beach, for example, FDOT project notices published by the city (opens in a new tab) refer to the 17th Street Causeway and SR 60/Beachland Boulevard where they meet A1A. Use those same names in your directions.
Communities We Serve and How They Differ
These are the same communities listed on our homepage. The county has five incorporated municipalities (Vero Beach, Sebastian, Fellsmere, Indian River Shores and Orchid) plus unincorporated communities such as Wabasso, and each one asks something a little different of a website.
Vero Beach
The county seat. The 2020 Census counted 16,354 people inside city limits, but plenty of addresses outside the city also read Vero Beach: the Town of Orchid's town hall and Wabasso Beach Park both use Vero Beach mailing addresses. For search, that means your Google Business Profile address, your website footer and your schema markup must agree with each other, and your pages should name the actual area you serve instead of leaning on the mailing city alone.
Sebastian
The county's most populous city, with 25,054 residents at the 2020 Census. Florida State Parks says the Sebastian Fishing Museum at nearby Sebastian Inlet State Park chronicles the history of the area's fishing industry, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service places Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge in the Indian River Lagoon near Sebastian. Census estimates put 36.8 percent of Sebastian residents at 65 or older, so readable type and simple navigation matter as much here as anywhere on the coast.
Indian River Shores and Orchid
Two small barrier island towns on A1A. Indian River Shores (opens in a new tab), incorporated in 1953, has more than six miles of Atlantic oceanfront. Orchid, incorporated in 1965 as a master-planned community, reports 400 to 500 residents and says about 80 percent of them are out of state in the summer months. If these are your customers, a good share of them may be reading your website from another state for part of the year.
Wabasso
Wabasso Beach Park is, in the words of the county's tourism site (opens in a new tab), a popular surf spot, and it has a live beach cam. The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge (opens in a new tab) stretches 20.5 miles from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso Beach, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service calls it the most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the world.
Fellsmere
Fellsmere is different from every other community on this list. Census figures show that 76.3 percent of residents are Hispanic or Latino and 69.9 percent of those age 5 and older speak a language other than English at home, compared with 15.1 and 14.1 percent countywide. A business that serves Fellsmere customers should seriously consider well-written Spanish pages, not an automatic translation button.
What Drives Business in Indian River County
No single industry explains this county. These are the customer groups and sectors that public data and the county's own planning documents point to, and they shape most of the websites we would build here.
- Seasonal and part-time residents. The comprehensive plan describes a significant seasonal population that peaks in the winter months and notes that many seasonal residents are of retirement age. Orchid's summer figure shows the other side of the same pattern.
- An older customer base. At 37.3 percent, the county's share of residents 65 and older is well above the 22.8 percent statewide figure.
- Health care. Health care and social assistance businesses reported about $1.59 billion in receipts in 2022, and the comprehensive plan links growth in health care jobs to the aging of the population.
- Fishing, boating and surfing. The Sebastian Inlet District calls the inlet a premier fishing, boating and surfing destination, and Florida State Parks (opens in a new tab) says surfers come from around the globe for its breaks while anglers fish from its jetties.
- Conservation and nature travel. Pelican Island protects more than 5,400 acres of waters and lands, and the tourism site counts over 100,000 acres of protected conservation land in the county.
- Golf and club communities. The tourism site (opens in a new tab) counts more than a dozen and a half golf courses in Vero Beach and Sebastian, including a county-owned public club with two 18-hole courses.
- Citrus. Florida law defines an "Indian River" citrus production area along this coast, and the comprehensive plan notes that citrus harvesting adds seasonal workers at its peak.
- Restaurants and lodging. Accommodation and food services sales in the county were about $473 million in 2022, per Census Bureau figures.
What This Means for an Indian River County Website
Here is where an Indian River site should differ from a generic Florida template, and from what we would build in Brevard or Palm Beach.
Reach seasonal residents before they arrive
Google's local ranking guidance (opens in a new tab) says results weigh relevance, distance and how well known a business is, and that distance is measured from the person searching. A winter resident planning from out of state is far away, so your pages have to win on relevance: name the town and the service in plain words, publish your seasonal hours, and post your "we are open for the season" update well before the rush. An email signup on the site lets you reach returning customers directly. Our local SEO work is built around this.
Design for readers 65 and older
With more than a third of residents 65 or older, we treat accessibility as a sales issue as well as a legal one. That means larger body text, strong color contrast, a tap-to-call phone number at the top of every page, no auto-advancing carousels, and buttons well above the 24 by 24 pixel minimum in WCAG 2.2's target size rule (opens in a new tab). Every site is tested with axe, keyboard navigation and screen reader checks; see our ADA website accessibility page for how we do it.
Spanish pages that read like Spanish
For businesses serving Fellsmere, we build separate Spanish pages, mark them with the correct language code and connect the two versions the way Google's documentation on localized pages (opens in a new tab) recommends, so search shows each visitor the right one.
Pages for anglers, surfers and nature visitors
Charter and surf businesses need trip or lesson pages that load quickly on a phone at the dock, a clear weather and cancellation policy, and booking or call buttons that work with one thumb. Rather than copying images, we link to official conditions sources such as the inlet webcams. Eco-tour operators should use the refuges' exact names and link to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pages for visitor rules, so the claims on your site always match the agency's. Our tourism and hospitality websites are planned this way.
Clear place names for real estate and clubs
The Town of Orchid notes that the name Orchid Island often causes confusion, because it names both the whole barrier island and the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club community that the town encompasses. Listing pages, neighborhood guides and rental descriptions should say exactly whether a property is in the Town of Orchid, Indian River Shores, the City of Vero Beach or an unincorporated area. Accurate place names help buyers, and they also help AI tools describe your listings correctly. See our real estate website design page for the rest of the approach.
Citrus copy that holds up
Section 601.091 of the Florida Statutes (opens in a new tab) says only citrus grown within a defined production area may be labeled with that area's name, and it draws the boundaries of the "Indian River" area along this coast. If you ship gift fruit, your product pages, product schema and order confirmations should all describe origin the same way, and your ordering pages should open and close with the harvest rather than sitting stale all summer.
Timing tip: if most of your revenue arrives with the winter season, start your website project in the summer. That leaves time to write, review and launch before the rush, and gives search engines several weeks to find the new pages before your returning customers start looking.

Frequently Asked Questions
My best customers spend the summer up north. Can my website reach them before they come back?
Yes, but it has to be built for that. Google measures distance from the person searching, so someone searching from out of state is matched mostly on relevance. Pages that clearly name your town, your services and your seasonal hours give you the best chance, and an email list lets you tell returning customers you are open before they arrive.
Can you build my site in English and Spanish for customers in Fellsmere?
Yes. We build real Spanish pages rather than a translation widget, mark each page with the correct language code, and connect the English and Spanish versions so Google can show the right one. The Spanish text should be written or reviewed by a fluent speaker you trust, and we will tell you plainly if a page is not ready.
Can I call my fruit Indian River citrus on my website?
Only if it was grown inside the Indian River production area defined in section 601.091 of the Florida Statutes. We will write your product pages to match where your fruit actually comes from, but we are not lawyers, so confirm anything you are unsure of with the Florida Department of Citrus or your own attorney.
Is Orchid Island the same place as the Town of Orchid?
No. The Town of Orchid itself notes that Orchid Island is the name of the whole barrier island, from Sebastian Inlet down to the St. Lucie County line, while the town is one small municipality on it. Real estate and rental pages should say exactly which one they mean so buyers, guests and search engines are not misled.
Do you build websites for fishing charters and surf businesses near Sebastian Inlet?
Yes. Those sites need fast mobile pages, clear trip or lesson options, an honest weather and cancellation policy and an easy way to book or call. We link to official sources for conditions, such as the inlet webcams, instead of copying their images, and we write the questions customers ask you on the dock into the site.
Will you meet with me in Vero Beach to get started?
No. A1A Web Design works entirely by phone, video and email from Buffalo, New York, and we do not make on-site visits. We share your Eastern time zone and take calls every day from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, so scheduling a video walkthrough of your current site is usually easy.
